Mitchell River Bridge

The Mitchell River Bridge project involved the design and construction of a 460-meter-long bridge over the Mitchell River on Dunbar Koolatah Road, a critical route providing a shortcut between the Cape and the Gulf. This major infrastructure project for Carpentaria Shire Council was developed to mitigate access issues caused by regular road closures due to severe wet season flooding.

Hansen Engineering Group provided comprehensive design packages, including bridge and approach road design, geotechnical analysis, hydrology, and environmental engineering. The project faced several challenges, including deep sandy material subject to severe scour, complex foundation conditions, high flood velocities, and the remote site location, requiring careful consideration of constructability and material constraints.

The bridge design included pre-stressed concrete deck units and tubular steel piles with concrete pile shafts, all documented to meet TMR specifications and AS5100 standards. Hansen Engineering Group also provided construction support, ensuring the project was delivered on time and within budget.
